Have a unit of musketeers fire a volley and inflict a single casualty into any unit and their morale status will immediately change from "eager" to "shaken" (this is also the case for high morale units). The short-range gunmen are mostly for demoralizing enemies, but the Musketeers can cause really heavy casualties! Especially the spanish ones. You should never rely on Gunners - the best is to place three or more in the frontline or placing two units with archers and artillery to support them. Remember, Artillery and flaming missiles affect morale, and the noise of guns do too. Otherwise, charge them in the back with your cavalry once everyone is engaged.

If you have succefully killed their general or at least a large portion of their cavalry/ missile troops, their remaining troops should be demoralized enough to rout pretty quickly. Your Gunners fire all they have (make sure their lines are straight, otherwise they´ll start reforming - huge time-waste!) and when the enemy if close enough, charge the infantry forward. Keep your other troops at a defensive position (not as far in front as possible - exhaustion affects enemy morale) and just wait until they get to them.

Send the cavalry around the enemy flanks and try to pick off their general, their cavalry and their missile troops - in that order. This is also where I place Archers and Cannons.Ģ:nd line: Frontline Infantry (Shock troops or whichever you don´t really care if you lose a bunch of)ģ:rd line: Secundary Infantry (the important and valuable ones) Hopefully, they´ll kill off enough enemies to cause a rout, otherwise they can take the enemy charge, so that your regular infantry doesn´t lose more men than necessary.ġ:st line: Musketeers/Hand Gunners. Regular Hand gunners and Arquebusiers are short-range gunmen, who are best to put in front to fire a volley or two at the enemy. Musketeers are long-range, powerful missile troops, and can cause large casualties and even trigger routs if you´re lucky and know how to use them.

Organ guns/Ribaults are cannons that are good at causing casualties, but not so good against buildings, they also lack the range of regular cannons.Ĭannon Ships are better, upgraded versions of your regular war ships, and are superior to any older form of ship. When used en masse, they can cause heavy casualties and only need a small force of infantry for defense and cavalry to hunt down routers (such armies are called Batteries IMO) "Gunpowder units" include all troops that use gun powder - which is Arquebusiers, Hand gunners (the worthless ones) as well as Cannons, Organ guns, Cannon Ships and Musketeers.Ĭannons are used to blow apart enemy defence towers and crack walls, can also be used to cause minor casualties and morale damage to enemy troops in the field.
